It's good to hear that there *is* a range of experiences! I'm an infrequent reader of LL (though it's among the many blogs I'd follow were there but world enough and time). So when I dip in every so often and see someone slamming professional editing, it's easy to assume that's the overall attitude.

In any case I am not convinced that the difficulty with the original example has anything to do with the anaphoric island issues.

Imagine it had been written:

A health report of 18 July on the BBC site about the risks of not taking physical exercise was spotted by Martin Wynne: “The public needed to be warned about the dangers of minimal activity rather than just reminded of the benefits of it."

Here there is no AIC issue involved, but I'm still inclined to misread it as "... reminded of the benefits of minimal activity". Presumably it's just more natural to interpret this as a parallel construction:

"the dangers of X ... the benefits of X"

I think that if you'll go back on Language Log, you'll find plenty of supportive comments -- but, of course, also reports of absurdities and (sometimes outrageous) errors. Many of the Lloggers have posted about the range of experiences.

What would you have us do?
